Career Splicing Workshops for Centre Members

In partnership with Cruxes Innovation, we’re offering another round of the Career Splicing Workshop Series for our Centre Early and Mid-career Researchers (EMCRs) from May through June, delivered online.

As a researcher, navigating the ever-evolving landscape of academia can be daunting. With the rise of interdisciplinary collaboration and the increasing demand for transferable skills, many find themselves at a crossroads, unsure of how to adapt and thrive in this dynamic environment.

These workshops are designed to equip researchers with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in today’s research landscape. Whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur, a curious academic, or exploring non-academic career paths, we have developed 3 immersive workshops experience to meet your unique needs.

By participating in these workshops, you’ll gain invaluable insights into key trends and skills essential for success in academia and beyond. From honing your entrepreneurial mindset to exploring non-academic career options, each workshop empowers you to take proactive steps towards achieving your career goals.

Workshop schedule

1) Skills to become a future-ready researcher

Date and time: 1st May 9:30am-12:30pm

Skills to become a future-ready researcher – for researchers who want to be better prepared for pursuing an academic career.

Maintaining and building a successful research career in a fast-changing research landscape is becoming an increasingly complex and dynamic challenge.  With disruption becoming the new norm, it is more critical than ever to develop the agility to adapt to the rapidly changing research landscape and seize emerging opportunities.

During this immersive half-day workshop, we will be working together to explore this fast-changing research landscape to identify key trends and skills that researchers will need to have and demonstrate to build a successful research career.

2) Entrepreneurial pathways for researchers

Date and time: 15th May 1pm-4pm

Entrepreneurial pathways for researchers – for researchers curious about and ready to explore ‘conceptually’ how they might turn their research into innovative products or services.

In this workshop, we will be working together to generate and explore ideas about translating your research findings and capabilities into solutions that could solve real-world problems. At the same time, you’ll be introduced to a way of rapidly testing ‘entrepreneurial options’ so that you have a starting point to evaluate the opportunities ahead.

3) Exploring and preparing for non-academic career options

Date and time: 6th June 9:30am-12:30pm

Exploring and preparing for non-academic career options – for researchers who want to start exploring opportunities to apply their research capabilities in employment outside academia.

In this workshop, we will be working together to explore what this might look like for you and begin developing an actionable plan to be better prepared to pursue career options beyond academia. The workshop has been purpose-designed for synthetic biology researchers to gain hands-on experience in taking steps to build an externally-facing profile that could be attractive to non-academic employers.

All workshops are stand-alone, and EMCRs can come along to one or all of them, depending on your availability and interest.
