New Fellows in synthetic biology

Two research leaders from the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology have been elected 2026 Fellows of The Australian Academy of Science – one of highest honours an Australian scientist can receive.

Deputy Director Professor Aleksandra Filipovska (The University of Western Australia) is an internationally recognised pioneer in synthetic biology. She helped establish and advance the field of mitochondrial gene expression, contributing to research that is informing new approaches to treating neurodegenerative disease.

Professor Filipovska said: ‘I’m deeply honoured to be elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. Science is always a collective endeavour, and I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work alongside outstanding colleagues, students and collaborators throughout my career. I’ve always been driven by curiosity and by the belief that rigorous research can make a real difference in the lives of children and families.

This recognition reflects not only the importance of discovery science, but also the value of collaboration, mentorship and creating opportunities for the next generation of scientists. I’m very grateful to the many people who have shaped and supported my journey.

It is especially meaningful to receive this honour alongside Nicki, who is an exceptional scientist, and I have had the privilege of collaborating with over the years in our wonderful Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology. Sharing this recognition makes it all the more special.’

Chief Investigator Distinguished Professor Nicki Packer (Macquarie University) is a world leader in glycomics. Her research focuses on analysing the complexity of glycans (carbohydrates and sugars). Her pioneering work linking glycomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and bioinformatics has applications across medicine and agriculture.

‘I am truly honoured to receive this award as recognition of my career and am delighted that my field of glycoscience is now being acknowledged as being crucial to understand for its role across so many biologies,’ says Distinguished Professor Packer.

Professor Filipovska and Distinguished Professor Packer are among 28 new Fellows admitted to the Academy this year.

Centre Director Ian Paulsen said: ‘It’s fabulous to see two such great researchers and role models in our Centre receiving the recognition they so highly deserve.’
