Professor Claudia Vickers named 2026 woman of influence

Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology research leader Professor Claudia Vickers has won the 2026 Life Sciences Queensland QIMR Berghofer Woman of Influence Award – recognition of a career that has helped put Queensland on the map as a global leader in synthetic biology.

The award celebrates a trailblazing woman whose work has advanced the growth and success of the Queensland life sciences sector. For Professor Vickers (Queensland University of Technology), that impact has come from connecting the people and organisations who make discovery possible: research, industry, government and the next generation of emerging talent.

The past year alone demonstrates her reach. She was instrumental in bringing international scientists to TERPNET2025 in Brisbane, represented Queensland at the Falling Walls Science Summit, led the Queensland arm of an international bioeconomy project and strengthened research-industry links through Synthetic Biology Australasia.

‘I’m very honoured to receive this award,’ says Professor Vickers. ‘Much of the impact it recognises has come from working across organisations and sectors to build capability, connect people, and create opportunities for others. I’m especially proud of the achievements of the researchers I’ve had the privilege to support.’

Through mentoring and a deep commitment to gender equity, diversity and inclusion, Professor Vickers is building stronger networks, empowering more confident leaders, and breaking down barriers to shape not only today’s life sciences industry, but tomorrow’s.
