The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology (CoESB) regularly appoints a Creative-in-Residence. We provide an award or salary of up to A$25,000 for a one-year program or project. We may also fund an additional A$5,000 (at the Centre Director or COO’s discretion) for essential costs of the project such as travel, production, specialist materials or distribution etc.
Your project must make significant contributions to the Centre’s strategic objectives through one or more of the following areas:
Creatives-in-Residence take an active part in collaborating with Centre members and engaging with Centre research and non-research programs. This may include speaking at seminars, running workshops, attending and contributing to public events, being showcased in marketing and media material, participating in school outreach activities and contributing to the CoESB Annual Conference.

Dr Jestin George was our designer-in-residence in 2022. Jestin delivered a suite of workshops, journaling sessions and discussions that explored the nexus between synthetic biology and design. Explorament workshops exposed participants to simple but provoking design methodologies created for complete beginners to ideate openly and freely. Another outcome was the launch of Synthesis, Australia’s first magazine to explore synbio design, edited by Centre members Dr Jestin George and Dr Andrew Care. The residency also resulted in several panel discussions introducing a broad range of national and international synbio-design research initiatives and practitioners. One was held at the Centre’s Hunter Valley conference in April 2022 and targeted at the full CoESB membership. An additional panel discussion between Henrietta Baird and Professor Sakkie Pretorius took place during National Science Week in August 2022.
